Default Girl sailing around the world

A sixteen year old girl, Jessica Watson, from Australia is starting her circumnavigation around the world leaving Syndey on Oct 18th. You can log onto www.jessicawatson.com.au to read her blog. Go to Google Earth to watch her progress. She's sending back pretty good pictures too.

I think I'll stick to circumnavigating Lake Sweetwater.

Default Girl sailing around world

Well she made it around Cape Horn and then ran into a big storm. She got knocked down (Mast hitting water) four times and then did a 180 rollover. The boat did right itself and very little damage was done. However the cabin was a mess with everything not tied down going everywhere. That's got to be a very brave girl!

Thanks for the reminder. I hadn't checked her progress in a couple of weeks.

Jessica Watson has now been at sea for 144 days, sailed 16,500 miles with about 6000 left until she returns to where she started, Sydney, Australia. She has not seen another human being nor touched land since she left. Another sixteen girl (slightly younger than Jessica) Abby Sunderland is also on her circumnavigation starting first in Marina Del Rey but stopping in Cabo San Lucas for repairs. She is now on her way to Cape Horn thence on around the world ending back at Cabo San Lucas non stop.

March 25, 2010 Jessica had sailed 18,000 miles in 154 days. She is on her way to Australia now with about a month to go.

Abby Sunderland rounded Cape Horn (Sailor's equivalant to climbing Mount Everst) with no incident and on her 71st day passed the Falcon Islands. She posted some nice pictures on her website! (abbysunderland.con)

= = = =

April 13th Jessica Watson has sailed past the 20,000 mile mark and now she's under Austrailia heading for the south of Tasmania on her final leg to Sydney, Au. Estimated time of arrival is around May 2nd.

April 14th she ran into a storm with 50 knot winds, cold stinging rain and lightning popping all around her boat at 4 AM, laying the boat on her side and pinning her there. Water was flooding up thru the sink into the galley and then into the bilges. I've had my boat accidentally laid over a few times but not that far! Also her mainsail was ripped too, and will have to be sewned when weather clears.

Been off for awhile getting a knee replacement. I imagine Jessica is getting pretty excited to be so close to home. I noticed where Abby had to pull in again for repairs (auto-steering out again) but I think she plans to continue on after repairs to her wind vane, she just won't have the title "Youngest to solo circumnavigate the world non-stop and unassisted" in a sailboat.
